100 Years of Scouting Cake

I have to admit that when Mitchell told me that we were doing the 100 years of Scouting cake for the Court of Honor I wanted to just make a simple 100 and call it good. That said, you know us we had to go all out and it is by far my favorite cake yet!!!

We looked online at different ideas for cakes and compiled our favorite ideas from like 10 different cakes and made our own. Our favorite ideas come from http://www.cakecentral.com/. We decided to make it a playful cake with different scenes of what a Boy Scout does with the focus of it being camping.

Mitchell using our airbrush to make the ground.

We made a chocolate cake with a chocolate creme cheese frosting. We found out something during our cake making that Pillsbury box mixes are so much better then Duncan Heinz. The Pillsbury was so moist it was amazing!

This was our first time that we have piped the border of a cake (the green grass area) and it turned out so much better then our usual balls of fondant. Mitchell did a great job and thanks to my Mom for showing us how to use our piping tips.

On the back of the cake Mitchell tagged our mountain. It says, "caveman rulz class of 200."
He also wrote, "No Girlz Allowd," (yes we know it is misspelled, that was on purpose) since it is for a Boy Scout Cake. Funny story, while we ate the cake after the Court of Honor a dad came up to Mitchell and said that his daughter read the No Girlz Allowd and thought that she could not eat the cake and was pretty sad. Once Mitchell found this out he cut the biggest slice of cake and took it over to her.
Some of our closeup pictures of the cake where we made a tent with a sleeping bag and pillow inside, a campfire, backpack with a sleeping roll beneath it and a Troop 355 sign.

Do not look to close at the little Boy Scout. I can not figure out how to use Gum paste and keep it looking smooth. The trees are made out of fondant and I made the little ice chest out of gum paste. Below the cool water fall is a kayak. The rocks are chocolate covered raisins that we bought at the store.
Mitchell with our final work of art. We did not get a close up of the 100 years of scouting but somehow it looked like a real piece of canvas or a piece of leather once it dried.

I helped at a cake decorating class with our Beehives at church this past Tuesday night and I learned a lot about cake decorating so I am so excited to show Mitchell and begin our next cake for Lindsay's 11th birthday in a week or so.
